ralphjd Posted 3 May , 2008 Share Posted 3 May , 2008 Just had a brilliant result from Martin on my man, any chance on the following chap:- HERBERT SALE Mersey Z/ 2601 Ordinary Seaman RNVR RN Depot (Crystal Palace) fingers crossed. Ralph.
melliget Posted 3 May , 2008 Share Posted 3 May , 2008 Ralph. There isn't a 'P' in front of that 'Z' in his RNVR service number, is there? I don't know much about RNVR records but, in the absence of replies so far, TNA's research guide gives some guidance on the divisions and the prefixes for the two mentions of Crystal Palace are KP, KW, KX (entered from Kitchener's army) and PZ (entered from civilian life or from the RN). The index online is for Royal Navy service (ratings). There is a Herbert Sale there, born Cambridgeshire, but if your man was only RNVR, his records are held elsewhere, hopefully (refer the guide). regards, Martin
joseph Posted 3 May , 2008 Share Posted 3 May , 2008 Hi, Z is the prefix for the Wales Division RNVR. Regards Charles
horatio2 Posted 4 May , 2008 Share Posted 4 May , 2008 Z is the prefix for the Wales Division RNVR. Not so. The Z prefix was for RNVR volunteers after the start of the war. The Wales Division volunteers were WZ/**** (Or Wales Z/****). Similarly MZ/**** for Mersey Division RNVR, LZ (London), etc.
horatio2 Posted 4 May , 2008 Share Posted 4 May , 2008 It is a pity that the unhelpful NA search engine for the RND Record Cards does not include the RNVR divisional prefix, which an integral part of a service number. If you search for this man's number (2601) it comes up with four men with the same number (Z/2601) but all will be from different RNVR Divisions. SALE does not appear on this NA search so he probably never joined the RND (although the errors in the NA record may be the reason for his absence). His enlistment papers will be in the Mersey Division ledgers at the FAA Museum. The original RND cards are also there and it may be worth double-checking. ralphjd Posted 4 May , 2008 Author Share Posted 4 May , 2008 Chaps, The only info re his service number etc is taken from the CWGC entry, nothing on his grave cross in our cemetery. Where is the FAA Museum please? Thanks for all the input so far. Ralph.
