 I have noticed a significant number of cases where in the column for the name of the regiment of the deceased is "ALIAS" when going to the next step they tell you to look under the proper family name of the said person, which out of curiosity I have done and found nothing under the name.

Can anyone give me an explanation as to why this has been done ?

You must be going wrong somewhere.

Many men served under assumed names for numerous reasons as often discussed on the Forum. Where this is known, CWGC include an entry under both names in their database.

The assumed name has the word 'ALIAS' in the 'Regiment' field to indicate that it is an information entry rather than the true record of the casualty.

If you look under the true name given, you will find the full entry. This entry usually includes the words 'Served as' followed by the alias name.

Beware that the initials may be different in each name. eg

Look up P.TRUDEL in Bexhill Cemetery, Sussex and you find this is an Alias. You then look up the true name, FREDETTE, and you find it is J.FREDETTE.
