Remembered Today:

The Mystery of Gunner Bass

The current edition of Stand To carries a letter in which the author puzzles over a man unknown to CWGC. Three men go to an RGA OP and, according to the War Diary, are then "missing". The author notes that the officer and another gunner are recorded by CWGC but that the Commission has no knowledge of the third man listed in the Diary - Gunner Bass.

It seemed just up my street as an "In From The Cold" challenge, so I emailed the letter writer for more details. Cutting a fairly short story even shorter, it became apparent that the officer had probably been wounded, taken prisoner and died a few days later.

I couldnt find Bass in the Overseas Deaths list so I wouldnt if perhaps he was not "well dead". Luckily, I found his papers on Ancestry. He'd suffered a fairly minor wound and had also been captured. He returned to the UK in December 1918 having been a bit chilly but never "out in the cold".
