Kathie Posted 11 February , 2004 Share Posted 11 February , 2004 I am researching the twenty names on the Great War section of the Port Alfred War Memorial in the Eastern Cape, South AFrica. I can find viritually notihing on Reuben Yell. According to the CWGC he was in the 16th Sqdn of teh RFC but there ws no 16th Sqdn that I can find. He died 9th March 1918 but I can find no reference anywhere. His father died in Port Aflred in 1897 and his mother survived him and was living in Cape Town. Could people keep an eye out for his name in diaries, books, letters written by others, newspapers - any little bit to help make him real. Many thanks. Chris_Baker Posted 11 February , 2004 Share Posted 11 February , 2004 Reuben Harold Yell is shown in "Officers Died in the Great War", but the detail is sparse. Temporary 2/Lt, RFC. Killed in action 9 March 1918. Would be worth searching through the London Gazette (on line), for announcement of his commission, etc.
John_Hartley Posted 11 February , 2004 Share Posted 11 February , 2004 Kathie Chris' reference to him being KiA is interesting, in that he doesnt appear in The Sky Their Battlefield. This is a book listing all flyers killed in combat (excepting the errors, of course). Possibly suggests that he wasnt killed while flying??? There was definately a 6th squadron. You find much from a Google search, but there are references. Without wishing to detract from all the info that you;ll find here, the real aerial experts are on the The Aerodrome forum. Terry Denham Posted 11 February , 2004 Share Posted 11 February , 2004 "Airmen Died" gives 2/Lt Reuben Harold YELL as being in 16 Sqdn. Age 21 Killed in action in R.E.8 serial A4294 with crewman 2/Lt D.A.S.Stevens. There certainly was a 16 Sqdn RFC on the Western Front and they flew R.E.8s from May 1917! They were based at Camblain-L'Abbé in March 1918 - North West of Arras and South West of Lens.
