Remembered Today:

Major-General Wulff Henry Grey, CB CMG

Recommended Posts

I wonder if anyone could tell me what Major-General Wulff Henry Grey, CB CMG did in the Great War? Does he appear in Who's Who?

I am currently researching his son, George Charles Grey, who became an MP for Berwick-on-Tweed at the age of 21 and was killed as a troop commander in Normandy in July 1944. He has a rare battlefield grave/private memorial.

Any help would be appreciated.

Having done a little research in the London Gazette, History of the Corps of Royal Engineers Vols 5-7, and Henniker’s Transportation on the Western Front, I have found out a little about Grey.

He was not a professional soldier, but had run a large commercial firm in West Africa prior to the war. He was given a temporary commission in the Royal Engineers. In September 1916 he was appointed Director of Inland Waterway Transport as a Temporary Colonel in Mesopotamia. In July 1917 he became Deputy Director General Transportation in Italy as a Temporary Brigadier-General and was promoted Major General the following month and made GOC Lines of Communication Mediterranean. At the end of 1917 he became Director General Transportation in Italy.

His CMG was gazetted 31/5/18 and he was also awarded the Serbian Order of the White Eagle 5th Class on 9/3/17 and the Italian Order of St Maurice and St Lazarus on 31/8/17. He was made a CB some time in 1917.

He was clearly a specialist in the Eric Geddes mould and left the Army at the end of the war.

I have not been able to lay hands on a relevant Who’s Who, but hope that the above helps.

Charles

I can only add a little to Charles's post. He married Alix, (1917) daughter of Charles Lennox Simpson, Senior Commissioner of Customs, China and was attached to the Serbian Army, 1915, hence the Order of the White Eagle. He was also an Officer of the Order of Orange- Nassau, 1948 (Netherlands).
