Neil Clark Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 Nice find Chris. I wonder if it's possible to find more by searching all Irish Rebel actions? I know this is an area John Morecombe has looked into.
Terry Denham Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 Cork is still as was as far as I know but could change. There are a large number of deaths in Ireland going through at the moment so hold off getting DCs till I check if these are amongst them. I'll get back to you. Sean. Posted 15 April , 2008 Share Posted 15 April , 2008 Hi Chris, Just to bring you up to date with the condition of the Cork Military Cemetery, the ground was landscaped some years ago and was maintained to a degree, but last year they began work on it to turn it into a public park for the area this should be opened within the next few months. Regards, Sean
chrisharley9 Posted 15 April , 2008 Author Share Posted 15 April , 2008 Sean thanks for the update - looks like the commemoration remains at Grangegorman Chris
Marc Thompson Posted 16 April , 2008 Share Posted 16 April , 2008 Chris / Terry Reference the Hampshire Regiment non-commemorations, with the help of the regimental museum I have pulled together a case for submitting Beattie and Whitear to CWGC for consideration, this includes death certificates and war diary entries. This case will be submitted with 2 other non-commemorated Hampshire Regiment soldiers next week and I hope for a positive outcome. If these two lads are already going through the mill for investigation then that is no problem; the main thing is that they are properly considered for commemoration. Hopefully, this doesn't tread on any toes. Regards Marc

Sean. Posted 17 April , 2008 Share Posted 17 April , 2008 Hi Gents, In case the need arises at a later stage I will search for the death cert for G Bowden RE, as all the others are being investigated (my local office). Regards, Sean

Terry Denham Posted 22 April , 2008 Share Posted 22 April , 2008 Chris Just to confirm that BOWDEN, BEATTIE and WISE are all in hand. They were submitted by someone in 2007. Their cases are with MoD and CWGC as we speak so you can stand down on those.
chrisharley9 Posted 22 April , 2008 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2008 Terry WISE has already been accepted (see my 1st post) What I will do this evening is draw up a list from my investigations so far & post in a new thread so as not to duplicate effort with regard to those who died in Ireland Chris

corisande Posted 13 September , 2011 Share Posted 13 September , 2011 I am looking at what happened that day in Cork at the moment. There are a lot of press stories on this link The odd thing (to me) is that nobody in the IRA seems to claim "responsibility" and I have been unable to find the story from the IRA perspective, which is very unusual. If anyone can give me a reference I would be grateful. The British deaths appear to have been in retaliation for 6 IRA men executed that morning in Cork The British death were 1.Lance Corporal J E L G Beattie, 2nd Hants Regiment. 2. Private W A Gill, 2nd Hampshire 3. Signalman G H Bowden, 6th Divisional Signal Company 4. L/Corporal L D Hodnett, Royal Army Service Corps 5. Private T Wise/Wyse, Royal Army Service Corps 6. Private Whitear, 2nd Hampshire 7. Private Vince may or may not have been part of this bout of killings Wise, Hodnett, Gill and Vince have CWGC graves, but as far as I can see not Beattie, Bowen or Whitear As the 3 men are covered in this thread, can someone update what is happening with their non-commemoration
