CSMMo Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 LTC F.A. Wynters was given command of 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade, RGA (TF) just as they were ordered from the UK to Alexandria for deployment to Gallipoli. Those soldiers who saw him saw him for the first time onboard ship. When the Gallipoli campaign opened, it was 4th Highland Mountain Brigade guns which landed first at "W" Beach" and were into action first there. When 29th Divisional Artillery organized into artillery groups, he was given command of Group 3 which included his Brigade. He was relieved of this command when Gallipoli was evacuated. He had extensive mountain gun experience, having earned the DSO in India in the late 19th century for action with a mountain gun battery. Here is his entry from my Nominal Roll of Officers, 4th HMB: Wynter, Francis Arthur Major- Brevet Lieutenant Colonel – A Regular Army officer, he was assigned to command the 4th HMB and made a Temporary Lieut. Colonel (with the 4th HMB) 2 April 1915. He was awarded Brevet Lieut. Col. on 8 Nov 1915. While still commanding the 4th HMB, he was also assigned to command Artillery Group III of the 29th Divisional Artillery. He was transferred from 4th HMB 27 Aug 1916. In various assignments, he was eventually designated a Temporary Brigadier General. He retired on 20th Nov. 1919 and was granted the honorary rank of Brigadier General. Mentioned in Despatches twice, French Croix de Guerre, Distinguished Service Order, Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. I hope this is of some help.
