Anthony Bagshaw Posted 13 April , 2008 Share Posted 13 April , 2008 Hi All, Just wondered whether there was a definitive list of all Indian Army Regiments during the war? I have done a search on the internet, have found a few but know there are more than i have found. Can anyone point me in the right direction at all please? Cheers
Steven Broomfield Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 I'm at work, so don't have the full details, but I bought a book a few years ago: a Lineage History of all regiments of the HEIC and IA. I find it very useful. I'll dig it out this evening and post details.
bushfighter Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 Anthony Look at Dr Graham Watson's excellent listings at: http://orbat.com/site/history/historical/india/army1914.html (Or Google THE INDIAN ARMY 1914.) Harry
Anthony Bagshaw Posted 14 April , 2008 Author Share Posted 14 April , 2008 Mr Broomfield, That would be excellent, thank you Harry, Thank you too. I did try a google search but didn;t find much. I'll try your suggestions though. Thanks again
Steven Broomfield Posted 14 April , 2008 Share Posted 14 April , 2008 A Register of Titles of the Units of the HEIC and Indian Armies, 1666 - 1947, by Chris kempton, published by the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum in 1997. I seem to recall it cost me £20, possibly 25 (shush, Mrs B thinks it was 15). Excellent value for money, but I have no idea if it's still available. ISBN 0 9530174 0 0. Also very useful is India's Army by Major Donovan Jackson (Invicta), published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co Ltd, round about 1940. I acquired a copy by pure chance many, many years ago: well worth looking out for.

Neil Clark Posted 15 April , 2008 Share Posted 15 April , 2008 If you get in touch with Geoff, I'm sure he will to help you. http://www.hut-six.co.uk/cgi-bin/search2.php If anyone can help it's Geoff, his work is quite remarkable... Just tried myself using his excellent search facility. It identifies all INDIAN army men. One would imagine that Geoff will be able to produce a report from this which displays only their Indian units?
Guest geoff501 Posted 15 April , 2008 Share Posted 15 April , 2008 If you get in touch with Geoff, I'm sure he will to help you. A list of regiments in which at least one died is here: http://www.hut-six.co.uk/lists/unitlist.html I believe it is complete - there may be a very small number missing. If you want a list of only Indian units, it probably could be easily done. Its only software. cheers, geoff
Neil Clark Posted 15 April , 2008 Share Posted 15 April , 2008 That is amazing..... If only I knew how to do it! Lads, Spread the word regarding this excellent search facility. I think it's about time Geoff got his very own page on the Great War Forum where his search engine can be properly discussed and appraised. stevem49 Posted 19 January , 2014 Share Posted 19 January , 2014 Welcome There are a few pages in the book 'Sepoys in the Trenches, The Indian Corps on the Western Front 1914-15' by Gordon Corrigan. In an appendix he also lists - Public Record Office (PRO) War diary Garhwal Brigade HQ, WO95/3943/44 - These may be online at the National Archives (not sure) otherwise you would have to visit. Have you put the details in a search engine, as this may also throw up some information. Not sure if you can send me a PM yet but if so - I will happily copy pages for you and send them to your email address. Might also be best to start your own thread asking specifically about the battalion. regards Steve M
