For those like me who don't know where places are in Canada. this is Manitoba.

Souris district is down in the bottom left corner.

So what was he doing in Quebec province?

James Philip Wark is not listed in the Canadian Military Files, so must have enlisted directly into the RFC

Here is his entry in the Canadian Book of Remembrance

There was a considerable RFC establishment in Canada for the enlistment and training of airmen, both Canadians and volunteers from the USA. Canada was divided into five recruiting districts, with headquarters in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver. Perhaps AM Wark was attached to the Montreal office.

Flying training was carried out by Nos 42, 43 and 44 Wings. An obvious question is: how did they manage to train in open cockpit aircraft in winter? After the US declaration of war, the hazards of the Canadian winter were overcome by moving the training down to Texas.

See SF Wise's "Canadian Airmen and the First World War".

James Philip Wark's mother Margaret Caroline Lyster was from Quebec, both of James parents are buried there at Richmond, Quebec.
