Zeppelins over Southend

Recommended Posts

A new exhibition started this week covering Southend's air raids, hospital work and war work from the Southend area. Popped in today to have a little look, some nice material there, as usually the case with museums, unfortunately, some of which has never seen the light of day before to members of the public.

A very nice photograph album from a nurse at Queen Mary's Hospital with quite a bit of material from the hospitals.

Andy, find here one award for defence of Southend - note ; `land machine' ???

Perhaps `your' Southend Museum may like to know of following ?

FREEMAN Charles T DSC Flt.Cdr. RNAS 85T151 Isle of Grain

C-in-C Nore 14.09.17 Gazetted

R.N.A.S. Officers - Hostile Air Raid on Southend 12.08.17 Mentioned in Despatches

For services on the above occasion when he engaged a superior force of the enemy in a land machine. Owing to his gun jamming he was forced to give up the attack. The information contained in his report is considered to be of value.

Just to add a little to Sadsac's post, Flt Cdr C T Freeman was flying Sopwith Pup 9912 between 1750 and 1920 on 12 August. He was at 10000 feet on a carburettor height test when anti-aircraft fire over Southend drew his attention to the Gothas over the sea. He attacked the enemy, but his Vickers gun jammed after 10 rounds. He cleared the stoppage, but was able to fire only two or three more shots before breaking off the combat.

Flt Cdr Freeman was involved in an attack on Zeppelin L17 flying Bristol Scout D 8953 from HMS Vindex on 2 August 1916 and had previously flown Pup 9912 on anti-Gotha patrols on 22 May and 7 July. He also flew Pup 9497 in deck landing trials in March, April and May as well as an Anti-Gotha patrol in June.

I hope this is interesting.

Is Queen Mary hospital the hotel that is still there on the hill, above the arcades? Looks similar.

The aviation museum in Coalhouse Fort in Tilbury is also well worth a visit. If memory serves that they have some artifacts from a Zeppellin that was shot down over Billericay. Incidentally it was also the site of a recent 'Most Haunted' investigation :P They made the tunnels looks like something from the Exorcist..I went down in the tunnels a few months ago with my dog and I can't say that either of us experienced anything supernatural!

Sadsac & Gareth,

Many thanks, any information re this would be great. Here is the route the Gotha's took on this raid.

Jim,

The very same, still there although need a little TLC now, it was being used as a refugee centre, but crime rates in the High Street went soaring, not being used as such anymore, empty for the time being, but the South Essex University have purchased it to refurb and use as a hall of residence. Never had halls of residence's like that in my day, great view over the Thames Estuary.
