burlington Posted 6 February , 2004 Share Posted 6 February , 2004 When I was a mere sprog in WW1 knowledge terms (not so long ago really!) I went on a guided tour to Iepers. One thing I was told was this (and I have already disproved other things I was told): Belgium law regarding cemetary land resticts use by familes to 99 years. After that the land is reused. There is supposed to be a movement in Belgium to reclaim WW1 cemetaries under this law. I don't believe a word of it- but this is what I was told. Paul Reed Posted 6 February , 2004 Share Posted 6 February , 2004 You should never believe what battlefield guides tell you... This is an old chesnut that comes up now and again; sometimes it is Belgium, sometimes France. There is some truth in it, but it applies to civil graves and not wargraves. Terry Denham will no doubt be able to tell us what the CWGC position is on this.
