Would any Ulster experts please hazard a guess as to when Rfmn 18/1765 William Francis Dunlop might have enlisted and gone to France? He was not aged 18 until September 1916. He was posted to 12th Bn.

Those who die in association with 1st July actions of 12th Btn. Quite a few 18/ nos. in there, several in their late teens etc. Have a gander throufgh and make your own mind up .... on the balance of possibility, I would say your man could have been in France.

Ollydot - 18th was a 'training / holding unit' - thus lots of guys numbered with 18th 19th etc ... but they serve overseas with the earlier numbered Btns. i.e. you get a lot of 18 and 19 prefixes to guys in 12th and 11th Btns.

The mysteries of army numbering. One for the esoteric types on the forum who love to mangle their minds with the complexities of the subject!

Now looking more likely he is part of the post Somme replacements? Having said that, I also have a lot of guys kia and wia on 1st July who only enlisted in November 1915 .. not exactly a long training period!
