Lt Kenneth P Symes RNVR served in RN Armoured Cars and later transferred to the Ministry of Munitions. An engineer by profession, he was a specialist in armour and armour piercing. Lt Symes worked on the design of the Flying Elephant heavy tank in 1916, carrying out armour piercing tests with captured German guns.

He later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps and was awarded the OBE. He left the Army with the rank of Brevet Major.

I am very interested in finding out about his early life, particularly any pre-war service, and about his time in armoured cars. Can anybody help?

With best regards,

Mike Dunn

He earned the 1914 Star with the RNAS, so was probably with the Motor Bandits in Flanders in Autumn 1914. GWF member Manicafan probably has more.
