MartH Posted 28 April , 2021 Share Posted 28 April , 2021 This means that after the WWII the first Vol 13 and Vol 14 public editions, were bound in the standard marron colour, and the they also were bound in the delux binding, including the maps. This is new information, and the books are very nice to have. Since we are having a bit of Der Weltkrieg Festival, would you like me to post photos of the looted Reichsarchiv set from Postdam in 1945 by an American Official Historian H M Cole? MartH Posted 28 April , 2021 Share Posted 28 April , 2021 The maps are very good if scanned in and calibrated into Linesman. But you need a A3 Scanner!
Overseer Posted 29 April , 2021 Share Posted 29 April , 2021 Charlie, Unfortunately, there is no indications (that I've noticed) of who previous owners might have been. I did find it interesting though, that both of my Volumes came from the same bookstore in Leipzig! Again, I do not have any indication whether they were purchased prior to the Wall going up or after, or if they made there way to Leipzig after the Walls fall. I'm a bit envious of the fact you have x3 of each (no wonder they were nearly impossible to find)! And the colour (slight bow to my English cousins) of the maps are brilliant. MartH, Oh, YES, PLEASE! Is there a story that goes along with the pics? Did you know Mr. Cole? I always assumed that a night or two before the February raid, that some staff officer or civil servant, wanting to do a little more research at home, checked them out of the holdings and took them home. Does anyone know the story about how they were returned to the Government after the war? Again, I appreciate the gracious welcome and hope I can become a real contributor to the on-going discussions. Just one thing that has bothered me over the years while I've been collecting has been the fact that I'm removing these (what I consider to be) valuable resources from their homeland, thereby preventing them from being seen or shared by the people whose families are chronicled inside. Like today, I just received in the mail from a dealer in Kirscheim unter Teck an excellent copy of KB 5. Feld Artillerie Regimentgeschichten, and while I'm very excited to increase my holdings of this particular series of books, I can't help but feel a bit saddened by the fact that it wasn't sold to a collector in Deutschland. Apologize for getting a bit "off topic". Highest Regards, Todd

The Prussian Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 Hello! But it ain't good for old books to stack them this way. Better is next to each other, because they need to breathe

charlie2 Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 Todd, I think you are very lucky to have a set in half leather, it must be quite a rarity. The 16 original volumes appear on the market in half leather but I have only ever seen a photo of one more half leather vol 13 (the on line copy at the Austrian library). I think I also saw a set on google which had been sold at auction relatively recently but I have never been able to find it again so I might have imagined it! My collection cannot rival that of MartH but I do have some with dust wrappers. BTW thanks for spelling colour correctly Charlie

Nice association version, my Grandfather was there at the inauguration , and is in the photos. My flag I believe came form Akseli Gallen-Kallela who was a close personal friend of his. The Prussian Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 I´m glad, I´ve got the entire collection. But I didn´t buy the new books of the Feldeisenbahnwesen. I only bought vol.
The Prussian Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 For all the serious collectors I´ve got a little gift... The (unpublished) ranklist of the higher staffs by outbreak of the war. Unfortunately I only have these scans. Part II:
charlie2 Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 Thanks Andy what book would they have belonged to if they had been published? Or was it just a stand alone booklet. 1 hour ago, The Prussian said: But I didn´t buy the new books of the Feldeisenbahnwesen. I only bought vol. 2 So you will presumably be missing 1 or 2 of the accompanying maps to vol 2 then or have you got them from elsewhere? For 55€ is wasn‘t worth the trouble of trying to find a copy of vol 2 on its own. Charlie
The Prussian Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 (edited) Hi Charlie! 1) I don´t know. I have only those photographs of the pages. I can´t ask the owner, who sent me those files, because unfortunately he passed away last year 2) I don´t know, if I miss several maps... Were there maps added in the 2010 edition??????????????????? You´re right, I didn´t want to spend 55€ just for a new edition. I thought it would be the same... Edited 30 April , 2021 by The Prussian

Yes, there were extra maps included as well as a set of colour facsimiles of all the vol 1 maps. I know you will have most of the extra maps. The Prussian Posted 30 April , 2021 Share Posted 30 April , 2021 Ah, ok. I see, those maps are from the 14 volumes, Stegemann and Schlachten des Weltkrieges. So I probably miss the maps 1 and

charlie2 Posted 26 May , 2021 Share Posted 26 May , 2021 (edited) A copy of Band 14 and the Beilagen, both clean and unread, in half leather sold today on EBay for an eye watering „buy it now“ price of 1250€. I don‘t think they were on offer for much over an hour. It looks like the half leather option was more common than was first thought. Overseer Posted 27 May , 2021 Share Posted 27 May , 2021 Charlie, Amazing. I'm glad to see that my "investment" is now being recognized as being worth more than the paper it's printed on! Just don't anyone let me wife know or she'll say "sell it and take me on a Holiday"! Cheers, Todd
charlie2 Posted 27 May , 2021 Share Posted 27 May , 2021 Keep them well hidden Todd Amazingly enough another Band 14 + Beilagen and Band 13 all in red cloth were sold very quickly on EBay this morning for about 1200€. Charlie
Overseer Posted 28 May , 2021 Share Posted 28 May , 2021 Gentlemen, In continuing the thread, I also have the two volumes of the translations of the Der Weltkrieg series by Humphries and Maker, published by Wilfrid Laurier University Press; 1914 in 2014 and 1915 in 2010. Its my sincere hope that Professor Humphries and his colleagues continue their work translating the original series. While I speak, read and write German, I do find the translations from the original to English interesting in that there are nuances that don't translate well (especially when you are trying to describe strategic, operational, and tactical terminology). Is anyone aware of additional work in this area, say perhaps the Regimental series like the Bavarian or Wurttemburg contingents? So therefore are not the end sales figures but explain to some extent the poorer sales figures for 3&4 and Feldeisenbahn, which had only been printed in 1926 and 1928 respectively.
