Dawn during the summer is from about 4.30 to 5 am BST so I have always wondered why they didn't attack earlier; possibly because of the chance of being silhouetted against the rising sun or perhaps the Staff and the Generals didn't think that they could cope without full daylight.

Hi Squirrel,

As I'm obssessed with clocks and time of jumping off I had to look this one up :-

using:- Geoscience Australia

Beaumont Hamel Lat= 50°05'00" Long= +2°39'00"

TIMES OF SUNRISE AND SUNSET

(for ideal horizon & meteorological conditions)

Time zone: +0.00 hours

01/07/1916
Rise 0344
Set 2002

{UTC}

Computed using National Mapping Division's sunrisenset program, version 2.2

So they would have had to get up about 3 am to be ready - for a pre-dawn launch?

Probably little sleep on the night before the attack - even given what we know now I reckon that an earlier start might have been an advantage.

IIRC, H-Hour was at 7.30 so that the French could complete their final bombardments in daylight, and reduce the German opposition

No!

Thanks so much to you two for posting it!

I got a shoddy 5(maybe 6 but was out of time on Graves) & I'm happy with that as its not my area at all.

Brill stuff.

If only it'd been Festubert <_<
