Guest Tricia_2 Posted 6 March , 2008 Share Posted 6 March , 2008 Hi! I'm researching my family history and was advised to visit this forum for a bit of help. Apparently, some distant cousins were in Athens during WWI, attending a church service before moving on. This is part of a bigger family legend and I am just trying to sort it out bit by bit. Can anyone shed light on when & why British soldiers would be in Athens, briefly, sometime during the first world war? I've been reading up on Greece at the time and it seems very complicated! Thank you.
Kate Wills Posted 6 March , 2008 Share Posted 6 March , 2008 Welcome to the Forum Trisha, Soldiers (certainly the officers) serving in the Salonika / Macedonia campaign could not easily get home on leave. Thus, leave had to be taken in the region, and a leave pass to Athens was often granted.
