I am looking to track down information on William Henry Ball who was killed at the Battle of Jutland on board HMS Invincible.

I'd be very grateful if anyone had any information about him, the ship, or good sources of information for these.

Many thanks.

Hi Matt,

You may find these two books useful. Both by V E Tarrant:

'Jutland - The German Perspective', pub Arms and Armour, 1995 (ISBN 1-85409-442-4) and

'Battlecruiser Invincible - The History of the First Battlecruiser', 1909-16, pub Arms and Armour, 1986 (ISBN 0-85368-791-9).

Ignore the sub-title of the first book! Its still an excellent book on the battle with excellent maps and so on. Even I could follow the battle with this....

If you want more on the man himself, you should get his naval service record from the National Archives at Kew. A researcher would probably be the best bet unless you live close.

I have researched the short career of WW Rosendale, a Boy on Invincible and killed at Jutland. I bought his medals and memorial plaque some years ago, for what now seems a rather reasonable price.

Good luck,

Geoff Smith

Can I suggest you try and get hold of a copy of "The Fighting at Jutland" by Fawcett & Hooper. Originally published circa 1920 as the accounts of 60 men at Jutland is was abridged to accounts of 45 men a year or three later and most recently the original version has been reprinted. Your local library ought to be able to obtain a copy. The wide range of first hand accounts bring the whole battle to life and are quite exciting and gripping to read. You should find a fair bit relating to HMS Invincible.
