Subalterns

Hello,

I understood that a Subaltern was a Second Lieutenant.I read in a book today mention of a Lieutenant being referred to as a Subaltern.Are they both classed as Subalterns or have i miss read this.

Subaltern is a military term that relates to all commissioned officers below the rank of Captain.
