i am researching a relative of mine ANDREW HOOD 22440 2ND BATT ROYAL SCOTS.i have recieved his service record which state that he joined royal scots 19/4/15 and was posted to the 17th batt. trained with them in britain and on 5th april 1916 posted overseas to france where he joined the 11th batt in the trenches, then transfered to the 13th batt on 24th may 1916. served with them until 8th july 1916 then transfered to 17th batt and fought on the somme.on 17th april 1917 he transfered to 2nd batt and served with thenm at the battle of arras? and 3rd passchendaele. he was wounded in his battalions attack on zonnebeke 26/9/17 dying of his wounds the same day in the casualty clearing station at dozinghem where he is buried.

can any of you 17th,11th,13th or 2nd batt royal scots experts provide me with any info on these battalions, where they were, what they were doing etc ? at the times andrew was with them. any info no matter how trivial would be much apprieciated. also interested to know where they trained etc prior to going to france.

thank you. gary thomson

I can start you off with some info from James' "British Regiments 1914-1918". 17th was raised in Edin Feb 1915 by Lord Rosebery & a committee as a Bantam battalion. April 15 at Glencorse. May 15 Selkirk. June 15 Masham. Aug 15 Chiseldon. 01/02/16 landed in France. Looks as though your man may have missed out on the first thousand to go, and followed on as part of a reinforcement draft.

I'm not a Royal Scots "expert" but one of my uncles was Alex Cunningham, Private, 271365, 2 Bn. Royal Scots (formerly 8192, Scottish Rifles), who died on 2nd September 1918 and is buried at Ecoust St. Mein in France.

At the time of your relative's death, the Battle of Polygon Wood had just launched as a continuation of the Battle of Menin Road and 2 Royal Scots was part of the 3rd. Division, V Corps, Fifth Army.

Sorry I can't offer more but will do so if my own research turns things up.

Yours aye,

Antony Cunningham Kozlowski
