post-31479-1203466553.jpgG'Day from Australia. I've been trawling the Forum for a couple of weeks now and have finally taken the plunge with my first post. I have here a strange British? WWI helmet which could be private purchase or a early forerunner produced during the helmet experimental craze. This beast is huge! It weighs in at 3 1/2 pounds and measures brim to brim 14" x 13" Sadly some of the liner is shot but it is very reminscent of a MkI liner. Helmet is magnetic. Liner supports appear to be made of car tyre rubber. The chinstrap is made of a spring covered in canvas. Although it was sourced here in Australia the seller (A dodgy looking scrap merchant) thought it had come from South Africa) Interesting eh! All guesses and / or knowledgable answers would be most welcome. Cheers Aussie1 (Roy) I will try to add a couple more pix.

Welcome to the forum Roy.

Can you tell me if there are any stamps in the metal of the helmet, like 'GMH', or something similar?

It looks home made to me, wit scraps of a WW II liner. A lot of metal scrapping yards have big machines that could manage that rough shape.
