RobJ Posted 18 February , 2008 Posted 18 February , 2008 I have just started reseaching my family history and have begun with my maternal grandmothers family. She always spoke of her brother who was killed in the Great War. I have discovered a certain amount of information about him which I have listed below. Name - William Neighbour Wakefield Initials - W N Nationality - United Kingdom Rank - Private Regiment / Service - North Staffordshire Regiment Unit Text - 8th bn Secondary Regiment - Army Service Corps Secondary Unit Text - ( formaly T4/239088 ) Age - 21 Date of Death - 12th March 1918 Service Number - 48852 Additional Information - Son of William and Annie Wakefield of 193 Church Street, Woking, Surrey. Casualty Type - Commonwealth War Dead Grave Memorial Reference - Pier and Face 14 B and 14 C Memorial - Thiepval Memorial He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial which lists soldiers killed in the Somme sector before 20th March 1918 and who have no known grave. I am trying to find out a little about what he and his regiment might have done and wondered if anyone could help. My mother seemed to think that he had something to do with horses and am wondering if this would link in to the details above. She has a picture of him with some mates and they are with some horses. I hope to get a copy of this picture soon and will post it on this thread. Any help here would be much appreciated no matter how small. Thanks Rob
jay dubaya Posted 18 February , 2008 Posted 18 February , 2008 hi Rob, welcome to the forum William certainly did have something to do with horses, note his secondary unit as being Army Service Corps. The T4 prefix to his ASC service no. would indicate that he was a Driver of horses. So at some point he was transferred to the North Staffs, perhaps with mounted duties. His MIC is here, and if you haven't already downloaded it I would recomend that you do so, cheers, Jon
