Kirkes Lamb Posted 18 February , 2008 Share Posted 18 February , 2008 Forum members may be interested to see the Government have now responded to the petition to hold a state funeral for the Unknown Warrior. Their response can be found via the following link:- http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page14569.asp Before the forum artillery opens up on my, I have no comment to make either way! Steven Broomfield Posted 18 February , 2008 Share Posted 18 February , 2008 How can you have a State Funeral for someone buried nearly 90 years ago and who already had a pretty impressive send-off? Do the starters of this believe the government has nothing better to ponder? For once, I agree with the governmental response.

Neil Clark Posted 18 February , 2008 Share Posted 18 February , 2008 What a non-starter! Surely some people have better things to do than demand a state funeral for an unknown soldier who was awarded the American C.M.H and given a pretty impressive sending off in the 1920's. Instead why don't they donate some money to the Non-Comm project or even better still volunteer for it and do some very mundane, boring but vitally important work! It says that they propose to hold a memorial service for the last veteran some months after his death!
Max Posted 19 February , 2008 Share Posted 19 February , 2008 Have you read the Government response? It says that they propose to hold a memorial service for the last veteran some months after his death! It actually says completely the opposite i.e. "This will commemorate not the death of the one individual, we sense from a number of the surviving veterans that this might be an intrusion into private grief, but the passing of them all." Kirkes Lamb Posted 19 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 February , 2008 Correct-I got it wrong but the point I meant to make was that they had no plans for a state funeral for the Unknown Soldier!
Moonraker Posted 19 February , 2008 Share Posted 19 February , 2008 I subscribe to the consensus indicated above that a state funeral now is not necessary. As to commemorating the death of the last survivor of the Great War, I continue to have the reservations that I expressed the last time this idea came up. It depends on the wishes of the person himself and his family. I don't know the service records of all the survivors, but I wonder if one or two are fairly routine, with no active service having been experienced? By all means use the occasion to remember all those who served, but I wonder if a state funeral would be appropriate for, say, a clerk or Home Service man? Kirkes Lamb Posted 19 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 February , 2008 Its not going to happens so no point in discussing it further! As for clerks and home service men-I guess some of those were killed in the war too!
