Hello. My great -grandparents were killed by the bombing of their home on july 24/25 1917, just out side of Oostvleteren , Belgium. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what action was occuring that night.I do not know if it was German artillary or not.

Thanks from Canada

Mike, there were no major battles occuring in the immediate vicinity, Oostveleteren being well behind British lines. The date is consistent, however, with the build-up to the launch of the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, which took place on the 31st July 1917. By July 24/25, the British forces were into their programme of artillery preparation. Supplies were being brought forward, as well as other work being carried out in readiness for the attack. German night bombing attacks, for example with Gotha bombers, often feature in reports at this time. These attacks were aimed at targets in the rear areas, such as encampments or railheads for example. Your great-grandparents may have been killed in one of these raids. Alternatively, their home may have been hit by a long-range German artillery shell.
