Great War Woodland Memorial

Hi there this is my first post.

Has anyone seen or heard the story about the small wood on the hillside in the shape of a heart which can be seen on the left of the southbound carridgeway of the M6 in Cumbria in between Tebay Village and Killington Services in Cumbria.

I was told a few years ago that this was planted by a woman who either lost her sweetheart or father in the Great War. Does anyone else know this story if not and if your passing just take a look.

All the best

THIS one?

It would appear that there are a few stories regarding the origins of the wood.

Frustratingly I can’t get the audio link to work for me!

Many stories regarding the heart shaped wood on the side of the Howgill Fells have been going around during the years.

They were that it was a memorial to a soldier lost in the Great War

They were planted by a farmer who owned the land as a memorial to his wife

However the farmers wife Hillary Wilson,on whose land it is located is adament that it was simply a copse planted which looks like a heart shape when viewed from the opposite fell or M6.

As the trees have now grown the heart shape is not as clear as it was 20 years ago.

Until she spoke about it on local radio I thought it was a memorial.

My great grandfather originally came from Tebay, indeed his ashes are scattered on the fells over looking the Lune Valley. I have been told by my father, that the heart shaped wood is from a broken hearted lover, with the broken heart being formed by a beck that runs down the centre.
