Adam Llewellyn Posted 16 February , 2008 Share Posted 16 February , 2008 Coldstreamer, I have just started looking in to Pte. Edward Dickinson 15483 4th Bn Coldstream Guards. From your previous post on this topic I know now that Edward died of wounds at 23 general hospital Etaples on the 27.6.1916. I understand that because of this it would be difficult to pin point when he was last in the front line, but would you have any entrys from the Battalion diary for June 1916. I have looked in the war diaries section on the forum, but couldn't find any links to the 4th Battalion. If possible, using your vast knowledge on the Coldstream Guards, would you know if the 4th Battalion had spent much time in the front line during June 1916 and if so where abouts. Regards. Llew. ian turner Posted 16 February , 2008 Share Posted 16 February , 2008 Llew, Looking at The Long Long Trail I note that the 4th Coldstream were in the Guards Division. They were a pioneer unit. The division was in subsequent action on the Somme during that summer, but most every day saw casualties in the daily struggles of trench warfare. The unit may not have been involved in a set-piece action at the time of your man's death, and as a pioneer unit they would not necessarily have been in such action, but life in the line and even behind it often proved fatal. Have a look at the linked site (top of this page). Ian
Adam Llewellyn Posted 16 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 16 February , 2008 Ian, Thanks for the reply. The first thing that I do with each gentlman on the Anstey Memorial is have a look on the Long, Long Trail site to establish which Brigade, Division their Battalion was with. I then follow the Divisional links to try to obtain the relevent details to where the Battalion could have been at the time of death for each individual. I do appreciate your remarks, but I was only asking if the Battalion diary was available to try and gain any further information on the 27th June. Regards. Llew.
