waltonsimon Posted 15 February , 2008 Share Posted 15 February , 2008 This question relates to the attached service record of my great grandfather Henry James Lamb. Having found out throught the 1901 census he was in the Royal navy on board ship I identifed and obtained his service record hoping that it would show information on when he joined and where he served upto and including the first world war. Well it does sort of! Looking at it it clearly shows he was stationed on a series of ships (and shore bases - Pembroke) undertaking duty in the North Americas and West Indies but shows he was invalided out in 1904. There are also then short periods of service in 1919 and 1921. I am having real problems interpreting this and am puzzled on why these should be on his record but nothing for the war? What could this mean and where can I look to see if he was doing something else? If this cannot be answered in this forum, please advise where I might go. sadsac Posted 15 February , 2008 Share Posted 15 February , 2008 Simon, from the Doc. supplied you have got (it looks like) the details of the Service Record of LAMB at the top and then where the line is drawn Record of HARRIS No. 341544 which is the latter part of a previous Record. `Your' LAMB was demobbed RN 4 July 1907 At least that is how it reads to me. Hope I have put it so that you can decypher. Regards Sadsac
horatio2 Posted 15 February , 2008 Share Posted 15 February , 2008 I agree. It is not unusual for a man with a long service record to have it carried forward onto the page of another man. Your man Lamb does not appear to have any service after 1904. when he was invalided. Do you have any evidence that he did serve in WW1?
per ardua per mare per terram Posted 15 February , 2008 Share Posted 15 February , 2008 I concur, there is a line drawn under Lamb's service and Alfred Harris' record contnues from a previous page.
waltonsimon Posted 15 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 15 February , 2008 Thanks for the assistance. No reason to assume he served in great war. That explains it but makes the bottom bit of the record difficult to decipher as there's a record of the 42 days hard labour and information about the other soldier's payments. I thought that HARRIS was the person signing of the record. Can I find out why he was invaoided out?
waltonsimon Posted 19 February , 2008 Author Share Posted 19 February , 2008 I forgot to add that the reason I was looking for war service is that there are no registered births between Mar 1913 and Dec 1919. So any advice would be useful.
