Hi

Can anyone assist with finding details of the above Indian Major who was killed on 11 Oct 1918 and lies in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN.

He was serving with the 12th Indian Pioneers (Kelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment) at the time he was killed.

Any information much appreciated.

Just a little David - from The Times online

Full name seems to have been William Hastings La Touche Darley (from OBE awarded in Birthday Honours 7/6/1918 - for services with the BEF in France)

LG of 1/6/1897 shows him transferring to the Devonshire Regiment as Sec Lt (University Candidate) from 4th Royal Irish Rifles

LG of 20/6/1899 shows his transfer to Indian Staff Corps as a Lt

There may have been a brother?? an H La Touche Darley RMLI is mentioned a couple of times too - and the shipping lists on FindMyPast show a Captain H La T Darley (+ manservant) travelling to Hong Kong from London departing 29/4/1904 aboard "Sardinia"

Hope it helps a little bit

Cheers

Sue

David,

He was appointed a Double Company Commander in the 12th Pioneers 29th November 1911. Promoted Captain 2 June 1906.

I contend he was not serving with the 12th when he died - I don't belive they served in France as a unit during WW1 but were is Mesopotamia.
