Sue Duffy Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 Hi everyone, I'm new to this so I hope someone out there can help. I have just started researching my family tree and my grandfather William McFadden had a brother called Samuel McFadden (Tyneside Z/1901) born 29 June 1893, joined Collingwood Battalion from the 1st Reserve Battalion on 9th May 1915 and died 4th June 1915. I also know that his cousins Robert McFadden (Tyneside Z/1903) and John R. McFadden (Tyneside Z/1902), I believe also died on the same day. What I would like to know is can anyone help me get more information about them and where can I find out if they are all on the Helles memorial? and if there are any documents I can get copies of. Duffy
ian turner Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 Hello Duffy and welcome to the forum. I expect there are Naval Division pals on here who can fill you in better than I can. Meantime I suppose you have looked at the CWGC website and searched for your men? ralphjd Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 Duffy, Ancestry.co have just released the RND records and both Samuel and Robert are there, under Roberts appears the following " Reported by KW/778 Petty Officer Cyril Dexter Hood Bn (formerly D Co 2nd Platoon Collingwood Bn) "went out on night of 4th June to find his cousin Robert Mcfadden and never returned" (PO Dexter was killed in action 7-11-1916) Ralph. (enlisted 11-11-1914)
Sue Duffy Posted 13 February , 2008 Author Posted 13 February , 2008 Hi Ian, Thanks for the information, I only had a little info and you have filled me in on a bit more. After I sent by post I continued browsing and found out what CWGC meant and have found there names. As I had'nt found John R I thought he might have died at the same time. Maybe your right and he survived, I'll just have to continue searching those census records. If you could recommend any other sites that would help in my various searches I would be very grateful for the information. Do you know if their names are actually on the Helles Memorial, you said Panel 8 to 15. Would it be possible to get photo's of there names? Regards Duffy
Sue Duffy Posted 13 February , 2008 Author Posted 13 February , 2008 ryjaydee, How sad, he went to look for his cousin and never returned. Wonder why he went looking for him? Leaves you wondering doesn't it. Duffy
horatio2 Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 John R was not an RND casualty. Robert was an Able Seaman Higher Grade. RND Record cards and enlistment papers for all three men are available at the Fleet Air Arm Museum. RND record cards only available to download from the National Archives. Ancestry.co.uk has the Jack Clegg Memorial Database of all RND naval casualties.

Tyneside Chinaman Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 hi again No names on this but taken prior to embarkation at Blanford so at least Robert and John should be on it somewhere Book compiled by Lt Stanley Geary RM
ralphjd Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 Duffy, As Ian has said both names ARE on the Helles Memorial on a panel numbered between 8 through to 15, if you try the following site you will find that they have photos of their names, as to the cost in buying them I have no idea, as various amounts have been bandied about recently. http://britishwargraves.org.uk/ Ralph
John Morcombe Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 John Robinson McFadden, transferred to Hood Battn. 8/6/15 & served until late September 1915 at Gallipoli, when he fell ill & was evacuated to Malta. He remained at Malta until returning to the UK 22/8/16. He was drafted to France 30/5/17 & rejoined Hood Battn. 24/6/17, but again fell ill (PUO) & was invalided to the UK 26/9/17. Again drafted to Hood in France 1/4/18, joined Hood 8/4/18, returned to UK 5/7/18 as "Candidate for Commission". He did not complete his Officer's training before the war ended & he was demobbed in Feb. 1919. Both Robert & John were originally reported missing after the disasterous attack 4/6/15, John subsequently turned up later. Samuel went out into no-man's land on the night of 4th June, he probably heard Robert was lying wounded out there somewhere.
