ChrisC Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 I picked this up in a charity bookshop today. It was published in 1931 by the editor Eric Partridge. It's a strange collection of short stories about the Great War, purportedly by writers who had "done their bit". Does anyone know anything about the book or the following contributors? Conal O' Riordan, Charles Edmonds, CW Grundy, John Brophy, "Miles", Corrie Denison, Stephen Southwold, EC Pattison, Norman Hancock, Eric Partridge. I'm only a couple of stories in at the moment and I really do not know what to think of it yet. More to come, methinks! Chris C

SiegeGunner Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 John Brophy and Eric Partridge wrote/edited "The Long Trail - Soldiers' Songs & Slang 1914-18".

ChrisC Posted 15 February , 2008 Author Posted 15 February , 2008 Many thanks, all. It's a fascinating book. It celebrates the "common" soldier, without - so far - indulging in crude " 'Aig bashing", (it even refers to him as "Duggy"!!). I guess with a publication date of 1931 it was in the full flood of "disillusioned" literature but so far no "lions led by ...". Being short stories, it's a delightful book to dip into. Chris C
