Smith64 Posted 13 February , 2008 Posted 13 February , 2008 I was wondering if there is any webcam active in the Somme region (or somewhere along the Western Front)...It seems strange that there aren't any (either in some town, or near some important place)... I think it would be nice to see some of these places in real time... Elena
Chris_Baker Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 Elena, almost all of the Somme is agricultural/rural land. Fields, woods, quiet villages. Apart from a few tractors moving about, all there is are the coaches, cars and bikes of tourists - and even they are concentrated at a relatively few spots. Watching a webcam might be rather like looking at a photograph.
towisuk Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 Theres a web cam on the square and Hotel de Ville in Arras, its from this town hall that the tunnels under Arras used by the allied troops were accessed. http://www.ville-arras.fr/cgi-bin/db2www.c...2006.mac/webcam This webcam updates every 15 seconds. regards Tom
towisuk Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 Heres a shot at 12:39 GMT today, looks like the same sort of weather we are having in North Lincs Tom

I know that the Somme is mostly rural and there is not much that changes from one moment to the other...But actually this is true for lots of other webcams, anywhere! As it's possible to include a webcam (any webcam) in one's homepage of iGoogle, I wanted one in the Somme...The Arras one is perfect, thanks! Elena
Guest KevinEndon Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 if you got round the corner to the left of the white dot, you will find the worlds greatest cake and bun shop. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm delicious
JimSmithson Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 And directly opposite the white dot on the other side of the square you will find a nice glass of Guinness for those less cake minded.
towisuk Posted 14 February , 2008 Posted 14 February , 2008 Irish bar on the other side of the square to the white dot, on the corner..... Tom Can't believe that Jim!!! talk about thinking alike!!!!!!!!!! We must have pressed the add reply button at the same time........ Tom
Guest KevinEndon Posted 15 February , 2008 Posted 15 February , 2008 Nicer weather but I have been told its freezing out there today
auchonvillerssomme Posted 15 February , 2008 Posted 15 February , 2008 It is....very cold, was up at Thiepval with my picture list, there was coach load of kids dressed for the South of France. I think the teachers blag them to get them here. Mick
albert Posted 20 February , 2008 Posted 20 February , 2008 I think the Ulster Tower would be a good spot for a discrete web cam.
Sly Posted 20 February , 2008 Posted 20 February , 2008 Hi, I live in the Somme... What is a webcam please ? Sly
Smith64 Posted 22 February , 2008 Author Posted 22 February , 2008 Hi, I live in the Somme... What is a webcam please ? Sly It is a camera that sends its signals in the internet...It is always on (or almost always! Sometimes one finds them switched off), so that you can see in any moment the image of the place (city, monument, or whatever) in front of the camera. For example this is the address of a webcam in Oxford http://www.bbc.co.uk/oxford/content/webcam...st_webcam.shtml , you will see the view from the 14th Century Carfax tower as it is in the moment you click on it (the image is updated every 5 minutes). Elena
IanA Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 If that webcam really refreshes every 15 seconds there are an awful lot of cars parked in the middle of the road and all of the residents appear to be playing 'statues'. A few birds appear to have been nailed to the sky.
Hywyn Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 Ian I'm not entirely sure but I think that you have to refresh your page as well. Hywyn
JimSmithson Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 Not too sure why we would want a web cam looking over somewhere on the Somme e.g. from the Ulster Tower. What would we be looking for? I know Arras well and things move a great deal more quickly on Place des Heros than I can see on the cam. About every 2 or 3 minutes refresh would be more truthful. Jim
IanA Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 I'm not entirely sure but I think that you have to refresh your page as well. Hmmm... The page disappears every 15 seconds or so and then comes back. I had assumed that this was it refreshing itself. Not to worry.
Hywyn Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 OK. Fair comment I had not clicked through to this actual webcam and was going on the (few) others that I had seen Hywyn (not worrying)
towisuk Posted 23 February , 2008 Posted 23 February , 2008 There could be a problem with the Arras webcam at the moment, a couple of weeks ago it was working fine Tom
YvanFrance Posted 15 April , 2008 Posted 15 April , 2008 Hi, I live in the Somme... What is a webcam please ? Sly
