Terry Posted 1 February , 2004 Posted 1 February , 2004 This past Friday I was busy looking after a library book sale when an old fellow who I have known for years dropped by. He had a little cardboard box with him, and ytold me that he had been sorting through his things at home and knew I might like to have the contents of the box. He refused any payment, and said farewell. In the box were: a Victorian Army LSGC medal to the Royal Artillery; an Edward VII Navy LSGC to the RMLI; an erased IGS 1854 Burma 1885-7; a QSA Driefontein/Paardeburg/Relief of Kimberley to the West Ridings; and finally, the gem of the bunch, a QSA Relief of Mafeking/Defence of Kimberley/Transvaal/Oranfe Free State to the Kimberley Volunteer Regt. (Everything checks out on this last medal; confirmed on the defence and relief rolls, etc. A late Christmas present for me from a gentleman who has known of my collecting for years.

Do you need any volunteers for your next library sale? Something similar happened to me when I was a kid. I used to sit and talk to an old man who was gardening next to my grandmothers cottage in the New Forest. One day I came home from a trip with a WW1 officers steel helmet, private purchase, badged up, and complete with a k/d cover. Seeing that I was interested in "Army things" the old man gave me a box full of badges buttons etc, including a British South Africa Co. medal won in the 1890s by his uncle. Years later my father told me that the man liked to talk to me because he would never have a grandson, his son had been killed in WW2. Since the advent of the online CWGC I have found that the mans son was a L/Cpl in 5th Hants, killed in Tunisia in February 1943, at the age of 21.

Oh what dreams are made of! David
Terry Posted 1 February , 2004 Author Posted 1 February , 2004 These medals had been the property of a militia lieutenant colonel who had lived in the area from the 1880's to 1921. He went overseas with the 1st Canadian Division engineers. I have also been promised his group (WW1 trio with star named to him as a major), Col Aux.LS medal and Col.Aux Officers Decoration. Apparently the colonel must have had a mini collection of medals himself, as the items I was given the other day have not been seen in public for decades.
