221 Siege Battery RGA

Can any one help with details of the 221 Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillary. I have a very old and damaged photo of a Gunner W Beaton who is listed being in the unit as part of the British Expeditionary Force. Was the BEF formed more or less when the war started and when did the title BEF get dropped, if it ever did? Found other references in the forum to the 221 Siege Battery but these were for a unit much later in the war and no references in the Long Long Trail. I am new to all of this so any help in guiding in the right direction / ideas where to look are appreachiated.

Gunner Beaton came from Nottingham if this is of any help and would have been about 39 at the start of the war.

Welcome Paul.

221 Siege Battery RGA, originally a 4 x 8 in Howitzer battery that went out to the Western front 11/01/1917. In June of that year it was made up to a 6 gun battery, with the extra personnel joining from 340 SB.

Gnr Walter BEETON 99510, although he attested in 1915 was an original member of this battery, and was from 36 Haylewood Road Nottingham. His records survive in the Burnt series.

Edit: also 8 in Hows when 6 guns, so do not know source of the 6 in How references for this battery mentioned elsewhere on forum

Welcome to the forum Paul,

One of the gents on my local memeorial was with the 221st. Langham Bishop MM he was killed in action on the 7th May 1917, only a week after joining them from the 30th siege battery. I can't tell you anymore Paul, but if you would like whats left of Walters records I can send them to you through e mail.
