high wood Posted 11 February , 2008 Share Posted 11 February , 2008 I thought you might like to see some pages from a sketch book drawn by Pte J Ronan of the 1/7th Battalion Royal Highlanders. I am having problems uploading more than picture at a time so as soon as someone requests more I can post another as a reply.

truthergw Posted 11 February , 2008 Share Posted 11 February , 2008 Very interesting illustration that last one. It looks as though it may be a barricade type of ' trench' built where the ground was very wet. Built from sandbags which of course were very easily damaged. Endless work to keep them in good repair. The sister batallion 4th BW were in them in the Armentieres area as were 2nd Btn whe were one of the regular btns in the Indian Corps. Again, the same area between La Bassee and St Eloi. The trench is wider than I imagined they would be. Artistic licence do you think?

truthergw Posted 12 February , 2008 Share Posted 12 February , 2008 Every one a gem. That last one in particular. Post 12 was closer to how I pictured the trenches.

Tom A McCluskey Posted 10 April , 2008 Share Posted 10 April , 2008 High Wood, Again, great pictures and many thanks for sharing them. Tom R, Do you not reckon that post number 9 is a breastwork/breastwork redoubt? Possibly situated in the Givenchy or the Ypres area? High Wood, Is there a date for post number 9? truthergw Posted 10 April , 2008 Share Posted 10 April , 2008 I certainly thought it was a breastwork rather than a trench proper. I hadn't thought of a redoubt. That would certainly fill the bill. I thought about the line between La Bassee and Messines because that was very wet and had a lot of breastworks where trenches could not be kept dry in the first winter of 14/15.
