I have been given details of JOHN DALY,(spelling DALEY in Coatbridge men of the Great War),which are that he lived at

16,East Stewart Street,Coatdyke and that he joined the 6th Btn Royal Irish Fusiliers. The service number in that book is 13236.I have looked everywhere for the details for John. CWGC,National War Memorial for Scotland,National Archives,Scottish Record Office,Ancestry......all to no avail.

He did come from Tullysaran,Armagh before moving to Lanarkshire,Scotland, though his birth parish was in Co.Tyrone.I have seen the name John Daly on the Dungannon War Memorial, but do not have a clue if this is number 13236 or not.Can anyone out there help me trace my grandfathers details.I would be most grateful.

Thank you all.

P.S. I notice on Ancestry on pension records that regimental numbers have been re-used for different soldiers....this seems strange....so maybe John had a different number?????

Dear Grant and Wull,

Thank you for the replies.I saw this man you mentioned Grant and ruled him out as he is younger than my John and the parents mentioned are not my Johns parents.Could they have got these two things wrong? He was definitely a John ....Wull.John Daly was born in August 1880 in Tullysaran,Armagh and christened in Clonfeacle.Co.Tyrone.His parents were Luke Daly and Mary, (nee)Lappin. He moved to Coatbridge Lanarkshire where he married Bridget Bennett and worked in the tube works near his home in Coatdyke, before he enlisted. He did not retirn from the war.In "Coatbridge men of the Great War, "it gives his regiment as Royal Irish Fusiliers ,6th Btn and his number as 13236.Maybe he remained with this regiment or perhaps he was transferred to another..thanks for your help....any other helpers out there

:D Thanks to all helpers for getting me to this point.I found another service number.Contact with a researcher at the R.I.F.Museum,Armagh has led to a POSSIBLE identification of my grandfather John Daly(though their surname spelling is different). If it turns out to be correct I SHALL update all of you. Thanks for previous help and suggestions.

Thanks to all who got me to this point.

Robert Cassells at the R.I.F. Museum has led me to the death statement on my grandfather. He died in France/Flanders on 18th July 1918 and is buried at Mont Noir Military Cemetary,St Jans Capelle.

I AM NOW trying to get my local authority to add his name to Coatbridge,Lanarkshire, Scotland, War Memorial.Grandads name has been spelt 4 ways in records and he had at least 2 service nos...so it has been difficult getting to this stage. But WE have done it.Thank you all.

Thanks to you both. The details all seem correct, except for the bit about the medals being collected by a Daniel....Now I am totally bamboozled :( ......as his fathers name was Luke Daly( no other name such as Daniel on his baptismal nor birth certificate).Does this mean that I am on the wrong Daly again??????

His other number shown on the book "COATBRIDGE MEN OF THE GREAT WAR." IS 13236.....but it has never led me to John in any search so far.

First step would be to check the 1901 census to see if there is a John Daily / Daly with a father called Daniel.

Might also be worth checking out Miss Jane Woods and the address at the same time

Went to Mont Noir,C.W.G.C. Cemetery a few weeks ago. Robert Cassells at the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum gave me information on John Daly...most of which fitted.I was elated.

Then another researcher looked up Johns medal details and found, that according to the person entering details on these things in 1921, it said his medals were claimed by a Daniel Daily, supposedly Johns father.

This threw me, as Johns father was called Luke.

Another poster then told me that often in those times the parent was illiterate and the letters to claim medals were sometimes written by another family member, such as cousin, uncle, etc on behalf of the parents ...so the wrong name could be put on the back of the medal index card regarding relationship to the deceased soldier.

What do you think?Could this be the case for my John Daily/Daly's father?

The visit to the Mont Noir Cemetery went ahead anyhow, as I really think that everything else fits there for my grandfather. It is such a beautiful little spot.Up a wee track into a woodland clearing.Butterflies in their dozens flitted in the hazy sunlight like so many of the souls who lost their lives their in 1918.

It was moving...solemn....absolutely heavenly little place.A fine place to lie if you cannot be at home.

We paid our respects to them all.....every one.We thought of those who had no name on their resting place.

If this is MY grandfathers resting place...as I think it is.....I am happy.

Not sure if this is useful, but mention just in case:

The Scottish NWM has also listed a John Daly, 9022 Irish Guards, date of death 17/9/16 - born Londonderry. CWGC does not give any more next of kin info however.

Thanks Ian, :) I have looked at this before and drawn a blank. Not to say it could not have been him though.I had thought it a possibility as his brother Luke was in the Guards.I cannot dismiss it either given all the mistakes in previous service numbers, place of birth, home address, next of kin and so on.Each time you are certain you have the correct man some little detail is just not there.

Something just leads me toward the mis-spelt John Daily/Daly in the Mont Noir Cemetery but I could be wrong.

The visit there was wonderful and if it is not my grandfathers headstone....it is someones grandfather.....so I think of him anyway.

Thank you and everyone else who is helping.

Thanks Rob, :D

This now eliminates that John from my research. The more I examine all the information to hand the more I am drawn to the John whose details people here and on other sites sent me..... (also sent by Robert Cassells of the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum.)

That is John Daly/Daily/Daley 24896, enlisted Hamilton Lanarkshire, home East Stewart St,Coatdyke Coatbridge who fell at Mont Noir,France and Flanders.

The only fly in the ointment is the point that his medals were collected by a Daniel Daly and on the card it has the words "father" next to that mans name.(See Susan Hemmings post on this site.)

As I recently found out that Johns father Luke Daly and his mother Mary were deceased by 1919 and the medals were not uplifted till later than that, it just leaves this little niggle in my mind. <_<

Anyway thank you all the same....research continues to see if this Daniel is any relative of my John at all.
