sammycat Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 I know of a soldier, Harry McAuley, born in Glasgow who died in WW1 in 1917, commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France, and I'm pretty sure I know who he is as the given age is correct, but I would like some cross-reference to prove it. The CWGC site & SNWM site have him listed, but no details of his parents. "Soldiers Died" CD also does not list his parents. Although born in Glasgow he is not listed in the Glasgow Roll of Honour book, which gives home addresses, so would have been ideal as a cross-reference if he had been listed. He is not listed in the "Evening Times Roll of Honour", also for those born or who lived in Glasgow. I have his medal card from TNA site but there are no clues there, and I've checked TNA site, but nothing relevant turning up for the surname. He was a Private, so probably not much hope of surviving records. I've checked local papers, but unfortuately the local paper seems to have not been printed during the years of WW1, with the last microfilm being 1912-13 then a gap until 1918-21 (either that or the library have lost some microfilms...) I have his death entry from GROS, but it just states KIA, and again no parents or address. Does anyone have any ideas where I could look next? If I can prove he is who I think he is, I'd like to apply to have him listed in the Glasgow Roll of Honour. Sammycat
Guest KevinEndon Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 There is a Harry McAuley from Glasgow appearing on Findmypast.com if that helps, I dont know how much it costs or if its free for a month Kevin
ypres1418 Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 Sammycat, nothing showing on ancestry for harry but there are two for 1901 in England. One born 1890 son of William and Mary, Portsmaouth the other one 1896 born Halingdon, Lancashire. Any good? mandy
Greyhound Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 Ancestry have yet to add the rest of the WWI service records, so if you wait a little while until they're all on line, you might just be lucky.
sammycat Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Posted 8 February , 2008 Hi Kevin & Ypres Thanks for your replies. In 1901 Harry was in Ireland (Co. Fermanagh) with an uncle. By 1909 he was back in Scotland, in Renfrewshire, with his siblings. The age at death of the Harry McAuley on CGWC is correct for him, its just that I'd like some cross check to know for certain, and just wondered if there was anywhere else I could look. My last experience of "Find my Past" with a soldier was that it seemed to have much the same info as CGWC web site. Is there likely to be anything further on "Find My Past" for Soldiers' records? If so, that may be the way to go... Greyhound - might be worth the Ancestry wait too, but I'm not sure his records have survived. Would they not show up on a search at TNA site if they were there? ypres1418 Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 are you sure it is harry and not hugh? ancestry have a hugh born 1891 mandy
Greyhound Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 I'm not sure his records have survived. Would they not show up on a search at TNA site if they were there? No, they won't. Chances are they haven't survived, but there's a good number that have. Shouldn't be too long to wait, they were a lot quicker putting up the WO364 papers than everyone expected.
sammycat Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Posted 8 February , 2008 Hi Mandy are you sure it is harry and not hugh? ancestry have a hugh born 1891 mandy Good thought, but he was not a Hugh. He was born 1886 Glasgow, as Henry (GROS), son of Thomas McAuley & Catherine McInany/McIneenay (nightmare surname with about 20-odd other spelling variations starting McA, McE, McI, McK, McQ etc) He seems to have been known in the family as Harry. sammycat Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Posted 8 February , 2008 Greyhound Thanks for that glimmer of hope! Although I'm aware the odds are not high, it would be great if his records have survived. I'll keep a watchful eye on Ancestry. Sammycat

sammycat Posted 8 February , 2008 Author Posted 8 February , 2008 Do you have this info? from 1901 Sister Annie, 13 Brother Thomas, 11 Sister Katie, 7 Brother Robert, 5 Sister Maria, 3 and brother James, 1 37 South Coburg Street, Civil parish, Glasgow, govan Registration District, Gorbals Mandy Hi Many Thanks, yes, got all that - and you have the correct family there . It's his WW1 "disappearance" I'm concerned with. The evidence points to it being him, I'd just like to prove it with something more than his being the correct age. Sammycat
ypres1418 Posted 8 February , 2008 Posted 8 February , 2008 Ok, glad you got that, if i can help further with look ups then just ask. mandy
