Remembered Today:

List of good WWI documentary films/series?

I have been trying to locate a list of (good/major) WWI documentaries, but without success.

Does anyone know any such list or resource?

I tried to use the keywords search in imdb, but that didn't work - it lists only 4 movies. List by imdb would have been great because the ratings would have shown the overall quality of the documentaries, making it easy to spot the best and avoid the worst.

Or maybe we could/should make such a list here?

Most of these are pretty good.

Thank you. :-)

What's the consensus on the Great War - series (BBC) - how accurate it still is, or to place that question differently: how much information and research is missing? I mean, it's pretty old series, like many of the WWI-related series.

Try looking or previewing if you can the following:

Channel Four "The First World War" Series of 4 dvds Based on the book by Professor Hew Strachan Series narrated and produced by Jonathan Lewis 2004

Focus on colour footage throughout; then and now film footage including out of the way fronts such as the Eastern Front quite good. Some inaccuracies but overall quite good and fast paced.

Interesting to see if 100th anniversary (2014-2018) brings out any new documentary series._

It's a certainty. We are already seeing repeats of some of the 90th anniversary programmes (the recent Somme documentary on Sky) and Jeremy Paxman's series about the Home Front is due soon. I think we can look forward to a full range over the next four years

Hope for some top quality stuff 2014 - 2018 too

Thanks for the steer, I really enjoyed 'The Game of Ghosts'. On the same YouTube page it recommended a 1976 documentary on the Somme narrated by Leo Mckern. I've only watched a few minutes of it so far but it looks interesting too, not least as an indicator of whether the 'Lions led by Donkeys' phase was still in full spate at the 60th anniversary
