The Great War (1914-1918) Forum

we are [mostly] wonderful!

It is all too easy to lose sight of what a marvellous Forum this is, and of how good, kind, and generous so many Pals are.

Several of my diffident ideas over the years have borne fruit to the common good:

brassards/armlets

Army Forms

regimental numbering [coming on fine!]

and now my suggestion for a fusilier cap badge photo archive is about to happen.

All of these, and many many others, are due to the Pals, and posterity will thank you, as I do.

We also see [if we open the relevant threads] too much nasty argumentative 'trolling', polemics, a lack of ability to see another view point, etc.

But the balance is brilliant, and the humour and decency shines through.

A big public thank you to Chris and the eminently sensible moderators.

[don't know what brought this uncharacteristic non-Grumpiness on, but I have it harnessed, I promise you]

Must be thinking of someone else.

But hear, hear, Grumpmeister, and I'll second your motion of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen who make this cyber world what it is!

'Tis a relief to all. Thought we were going to have to chuck a bucket of cold water over you.

I "second" Grumpy's thoughts heartily. Were it not for all the help I have received, my great uncle's diary transcription would never have seen the light of day (particularly not with so many explanatory details which really add so much).

I can only second this- it contains extraordinarily diverse and rich discussion from a really wide variety of people. What is more it keeps going and developing rather than reaching a sort of evolutionary ending as interest palls. Remarkable. Thank you Chris, moderators and contributors.

I totally agree but John, keep that bucket handy.

Who are you and what have you done with the real Grumpy?

:D

But whoever you are, I agree with all of your sentiments.

Cannot but agree with all the opinions expressed - it is a pleasure to be able to call on such expertise and willingness to share and the kindness and patience shown is quite extraordinary. .

Thanks for expressing that, it helps to keep things in perspective.

It isn't only Great War research projects.

A bilingual forum member helped me write a letter to an elderly French woman, who was thrilled to bits and has used one of the images I sent her as the public face of her restaurant. Not one of my photos, but an historic photo that meant something to her.

This person didn't need to help me, but what he did made all the difference. I'd got myself in a muddle with tenses and I felt shy about asking (as well as a bit dim) but he was ever so nice about it.

Step forward............ no, he'll probably be embarrassed. :)

Yes, another good Forum example.

My appeal for Fusilier cap badge photographs produced a stunning response.

I belong to several other themed fora [dare not use 'forums'] and on none do I find much inclination to altruism, as opposed to personal gain.

your avatar puts the wind up me, Dragon.

I'll change him soon. He's called Tiger and he was rescued by the RSPCA from an old man who had....wait for it.... 38 cats in a very small house. They were all cared for and healthy enough, but he just couldn't cope any more.

Examples of forum altruism for the living and the dead are legion, but I was struck by this still running thread.

done and dusted (almost) in some 48 hours. Brilliant work by those concerned.

Yes John. Please do. I've a feeling that I might be needing it sooner rather than later!

Quite agree.

Last year I "organised" the Last Post Buglers Dinner in Ypres- I had donations from all over the GWF world and loads of help in Ypres and the UK to make the evening a success. The Forum sort of conjured this up without very much effort from me - but of course, it was the kindness and enthusiastic endeavours of many Pals that finally did the job. I have a lump in my throat thinking about it.

As a new boy on the patch can I add my congratulations to all who make this Forum what it is. I have, over many years, been member of a number of groups with one military theme or another. None match the welcoming comradeship and willingness to help so evident on this site.

A truly welcoming site and a fantastic place of knowledge. Many decent Pals out there and hopefully meet few of you tonight at Stockport WFA. Keep up the good work, for mere novices like me the amount of help and wisdom astounds me and it totally invaluable

Know what you mean, mate. I hate it when we go off on one these back-slapping trips - reminds me of "other places". ;)

No disrespect intended to the Grumpmeister, or anyone else, of course.

So do I, but I'd been wanting to say something about this particular act of generousity and I thought if I started a thread, it might turn into one of those back-slapping trips. You know.

This just gave me the opportunity.

Of course, it`s not entirely a back slapping thread, there`s some backside kicking as well. So nobody knows which section they may or may not be in. And may assume the worst! Perhaps an individual appreciation post is more likely to hit the spot.

We also see [if we open the relevant threads] too much nasty argumentative 'trolling', polemics, a lack of ability to see another view point, etc.

But we can all agree, without a downside, on the excellent job done by those who facilitate the forum.

We can and do.
