AndyMacdonald Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 I'm curious to know whether this DCM is real or fake. I only have the following two photos, and no details on the name stamped into the rim.
Coldstreamer Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 If no one replies by later today i will dig "my" one out and compare them what makes you suspect its not legit ?
AndyMacdonald Posted 6 February , 2008 Author Posted 6 February , 2008 If no one replies by later today i will dig "my" one out and compare them what makes you suspect its not legit ? I actually think it's legit... but I also think there's people out there who know more than me on these matters. I read an earlier thread that suggested putting up some pics of DCMs and take the feedback. Andy M
squirrel Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 Looks pukka to me as well - but then I have only handled one "real" one.
stevem49 Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 It looks real with a later ribbon attached. I have a replica and that is very shiny and would not fool anyone. sm
59165 Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 Hiya Andy, It looks the real thing.I suppose the thing that might make you think its a duff un is the shoddy way the letters seem to be arranged on the back.Thats fine.If you see them on a clean one, this isn't so evident & is caused by the slight 'curve' on the back. When polished, this 'optical illusion' seems less harsh. The GIV(or RGI) on the front should look as if they're in a straight line. The GV DCM is not the best made of the awards. Copy ones are usually cast, easier to spot than Bin Laden at a barmitzvah.I haven't yet seen a copy stamped one.Replacement's are easy to spot. Has anyone a close up of an E VII or a Vic? I've only seen them from a distance & would love to compare them. Dave.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 6 February , 2008 Posted 6 February , 2008 Thank you for PM I think I can make out the BM initials {@ the truncation of the King's Bust}if unamed,it is probably one of those awarded to Allied troops{French Belgian,American, etc;}which were awarded unamed.I would concur with those above that it looks "right" In @ least one of the post~contemporary "Jeweller's Copies",the King's Nose is suffering from "Pinnochioitis" NB:~ ALL genuine DCMs & MMs/MSMs/BWMs etc have BM, by the truncation
Staffsyeoman Posted 7 February , 2008 Posted 7 February , 2008 It certainly hasn't seen a lot of wear, or polishing, not that that, in itself, suggests skullduggery. Echo completely Harry's point about the 'B.M.' in the truncation of the bust - often left out on reproductions and fakes. Does it swivel? (Don't force it!) If a real WW1 version it should; it looks like it has the capping rivet at the top of the central suspension around which a real medal pivots. (Cast fakes can reproduce it, - they don't recreate the actual swivel mount as that's more production process - but there's usually an obvious seam line on it). I have seen very (VERY!) late issue GVR DCMs with the WW1 disk - Field Marshal bust, as here, but the non-swivelling mounting as used from the 1930s onwards. But on balance it looks perfectly OK. If you could do pics of the reverse or the naming, that would help?
CROONAERT Posted 7 February , 2008 Posted 7 February , 2008 Echo completely Harry's point about the 'B.M.' in the truncation of the bust - often left out on reproductions and fakes. Unfortunately, Phil, that's no longer the case. In the 12 or so fakes that I've (knowingly) picked up over the past few years, all have had the BM mark (though this was encountered less on the pre-2000 copies). None would pass as the real thing on close scrutiny though - the workmanship was far inferior. Dave.
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 7 February , 2008 Posted 7 February , 2008 I can only echo Staffsyeoman warning "it should swivel" ~BUT dont force it,if not worn by wear & tear; they can be extremely tight & can snap if forced
