Picked this cheap shell up recently from a local guy.

It looks to be a Mk.1 rimmed Brodies (HS 236).

Someone took most of the rim off however, and painted it gold (possibly as a parade helmet or simply as an ornament). I'd imagine the latter as it has 3 holes in the brim, possibly to afix to a wall. The gold paint seems to have been applied without washing/sanding the helmet and has therefore bubbled considerably (although most of it has come off with age).

It doesnt carry any traces of sand/cork in the original paint (smooth dark green).

Under where the felt pad would have been, the faint outline of the number 665 appears imprinted in the paint

Possibly for theatricals. I picked up a Canadian Militia pith helmet with a beautiful 1908 plate to the 31st Regiment. The spike had been broken off, and the whole had been covered with brown paper painted gold.

Interesting - sometimes holes relate to a fitting of a Cruise Visor, but that's usually three in a row...

Possibly I've watched "The Battle of Godfrey's Cottage" once too often, but the spacing of the holes suggests a hanging basket to me.

Wouldn't be surprising - i've got a Brodie, with another on the way via my aunt, that were painted yellow by my grandma and used as flower pots

I reckon you're right on the money there!
