Can anyone help with the date for enlistment of an RGA gunner numbered 156169 ?

Hi,

A search on Ancestry for that Regimental number has returned an Ernest Sadler Leyland.

I'm not sure if it is from the RGA though, as my ancestry subscription has expired, and I am waiting for more records to come online before I renew.

I have downloaded some pages on E S Leyland but there were only 4 pages. Is that the same as you have?

Peter,

They must be the same pages that are on Ancestry. Not very good are they? I can tell you that he started at Fort Brockhurst but that's about it. It is incredibly difficult to trace a gunners movements from then on. The returns for that Depot are not so complete as to tell us the number of gunners that were transferred to other Companies or depots on any given day. The best I can say is that he turned up with another 245 men that were conscripted or were mobilised Derby Scheme men.

Have you tried the burnt series?

yes thats the ones.

Burnt records are a bit harder for me but I will work on getting more about the 441 and 446 Siege Batteries diaries and as much info on Fort Brockhurst.

Its interesting that his older brother (my Grandfather) volunteered into the Manchesters in 1914 and had a better paid job in the Mills but Ernest waited until conscripted. Probably because he was married.
