Jim Strawbridge Posted 5 February , 2008 Posted 5 February , 2008 John, Are you asking where he would appear on a village, town, city or national war memorial? If so there is no hard and fast reason why he has to be on any of them as a matter of right. The war memorials were generally managed by local committee who arranged the fund raising to erect it, the commission and design and the master list of names to go on it. The names would be gathered from the loved ones, friends, local newspapers and general knowledge of the area. The locals would generally know who had been casualties. But if someone had moved from one area to another and were not generally outstanding (or a church goer) in either, then it is quite possible that a casualty never made it onto any memorial at all. It would be for family and friends to put the name forward onto the list. It was not a nationally organised campaign ensuring that every name went on a memorial. The converse happens where someone's name gets on to more than one memorial and this is not uncommon. I hope that this helps.

Roger Thompson Posted 5 February , 2008 Posted 5 February , 2008 Hi there John, Neither have I been able to solve it, the only Roll of honour I couldn't view was Uppermill, but having said that if you Google Uppermill Roll of Honour, in the results look for Oldham Council-Local studies and Archives-sources. htm, it lists books about the memorial, it might be a case of dropping them an e-mail to see if they can help. Cheers Roger.
