T. Smith

Hello to you all,

There are 7 Smiths on the Anstey memorial. I've managed to link 6 of them to Anstey, but I'm having some problems with T. Smith. On the 1901 census the only gent with a T christian name was Thomas. Could some kind person please check a Thomas Smith, linked to Anstey or Leics, on SDGW for me please.

I send apologies. The problem that I have is that there are two T. Smiths on the memorial. I must make a note to stop sending bum information in new topics.

Llew, Only one with Anstey.Others are :- Enlisted Leicester 17769 Cameronians; born and enlisted Leicester 30522 1/5 th Leicesters; 25285 7th Leicesters; 20491 6th Leicesters. All T Smith . Ralph.

Not sure if you have this but the following is a list from SDGW of ALL those who were

Born or Enlisted or Resided in Anstey.

Might be of some use....bet theres some not on the local memorial.

Thanks for this. There are 113 names on the memorial and 26 of the names on the list are not on the memorial. I would guess that the reason for this is, that names would have been put on the memorials at where the gents were born. Glyn is the list for Anstey Leics?

Interestingly the T SMITH that Ralph has put forward is listed as Born in Anstey Herts , although it has him enlisting in Leicester... bit of uncertainty there.

List of names on the Anstey memorial.

Hi Glyn,

After spending some time on Ancestry and checking the names on the 1901 census with Anstey and Leicestershire I think that I have managed to get the definite's down to these last 7,

William Cunnington 4241 born in Anstey 1896 not on the memorial.

Thomas Edgar 3799 born in Anstey 1897 not on the memorial.

Frderick Archibald Hilder 1934 born in Glenfield 1895 not on the memorial. (Glenfield next door to Anstey)

Frank Jordan 10617 not born in Anstey not on the memorial. Ernest Jordan is on the memorial, possible brothers. Have not found a place of birth for both. They must have been living in Anstey at the out break of war?

Hugh Mansfield 9034 born in Anstey 1890 not on the memorial. (Parents of Thurcaston, next door to Anstey)

Frederick Raynor 7454 not born in Anstey not on the memorial, possible resident?

George Selvidge 44100 born in Anstey not on the memorial.

I also have these two gents who I managed to come by on CWGC with the help of Geoffs Search Engine.

J. W. Black 260012 Hampshire Regiment, secondary regiment Labour corps son of Charles and Emma of Anstey. Age 54 date of death 15.8.1920. Buried at Leicester Gilroes Cemetery.

George Harry Burdett 160 Household Battalion husband of Lavinia of Anstey.

Both are not on the memorial.

I assume there were various reasons why names were not put on memorials, sad thing is we will never know.

At some time in the near future I intend to search out the Glenfield and other local memorials and would expect to find some of the other Anstey names on them.
