A friend travelling has just discovered a great uncle who fell on 30 Jul 16 and who is commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial. Can anyone help with an extract from the bn diary covering the night before occupying the FL and their time in it until relieved on [31st] Jul 16? I think they moved into Carnoy and from thence may have been involved in Bernafay Wood and/or Trones Wood and onto Guillemont. Fingers crossed Chris

bantamforgot Posted 4 February , 2008 Posted 4 February , 2008 Hello Chris, Sorry it was very brief but I was just off to work, the 17th. were involved in carrying parties prior to the action, as the trenches at Bernefay were occupied they were lying down in the open until moved to M.H. trench, hence that may well be where your friend received his wound. No place to be on that open ground at that time, as you may know the 17th. were reduced to a cadre & eventually joined with the 15th. WY in the 31st. Div. in 1917, No I was not a boysoldier but I thought the name appropiate for my interests in WW1 , although my grandfather was no boysoldier when he was kia 1/9/16 aged 39. My regards. Colin

I vaguely know the wood and the location of the farm, but not the trenches. We travel over next week so its really good that I'll be able to get my neighbour in the general area of her GU's SoA. It'll be outstanding to be more precise (oh, oh, I can feel the urge to buy Linesman coming on ) Regards Chris
