Paul K Posted 30 January , 2004 Share Posted 30 January , 2004 Here is an interesting tid-bit of information that I found. Tyne Cot was so called because British soldiers from the Tyne thought that a barn west of the Broodseinde-Passchendaele Road, looked like a local cottage, or cot.) Has anybody heard this before and does anyone else have any more examples of names of places that were given by soldiers of WW1, and as such are still referred to today. Bob Coulson Posted 30 January , 2004 Share Posted 30 January , 2004 Paul, Many of the Northumberland Fusiliers were from the mining communities in the North East of England and the story goes that they thought the German Pill Boxes looked like the miners cottages dotted about the hillside at home.
