Guest Janetell Posted 29 January , 2004 Posted 29 January , 2004 Hello all This is my first posting to this list. I have been researching my family's history for many years, but right now I am trying to find out more about my paternal grandfather who died in France in 1917. He was in the Lincolnshire Regiment. I hav downloaded the Medal Roll entry which tells me that he was awarded the Vicory Medal. I am not an expert in any way with Military Matters, but I wondered if there was a possiblity that I could obtain a copy of the Certificate that may have been awarded with this medal. No one in the family seems to know what became of the medal, no doubt my grandmother did receive it on her late husband's behalf but she died before I was born and the family documents scattered. robwilliams Posted 29 January , 2004 Posted 29 January , 2004 Janet, He should also have received the War Medal and the Memorial Plaque. There is no certificate as such, the medal roll was the proof of entitlement. Rob

There is no certificate as such, the medal roll was the proof of entitlement. Rob All medals were sent with transmittal slips, one for each medal. In the case of soldiers who died these were sent to the NOK and the wording was different. The bottom had a tear off which had to be signed and returned to the Record Office. You sometimes see these in service records at the PRO. You may be referring to the medal index card, which has on it the name, rank, number & unit of the soldier plus old War Office references for the respective medal rolls. Those with surnames beginning with A & B are available on-line at £3 each. At this moment you will need to visit the PRO for C to Z, who ask someone going there to do you a look-up. In addition to the campaign medals, and the Memorial plaque there was also a Memorial Scroll issued to the next of kin. Ian
