infinitybydali Posted 24 January , 2008 Share Posted 24 January , 2008 I've recently found my late Grandfather's medals and used the parent site to obtain his medal card via the National Archives. I've also used the search option to look up the Regiment and intend to purchase the books "The Poplars" and "Hell on High Wood". Unfortunately, I don't understand the various mergers of the Regiment and which brigade or division they were in and how the whole structure works. He was posted in France from 27 June 1915 and seems to have been in 17/1 (if that's the right terminology) and his Regt Nos were 2952 and 570984. Can anyone please clarify whether this means he would have been part of the Battalion that fought at Loos, High Wood, Eaucort L'Abbaye, Ypres, Bourlon Wood, La Vacquerie, Le Mesnil, Bray Sur Somme, Moislains and Tournai. Can you also let me know whether this regiment were territorials in today's sense or regular soldiers? Finally, do the Regt Nos provide any further insight as to his war service? I never met him as he died from TB long before I was born. I have the bare dates of his life from family history research but it would be great to put some flesh on the bones. Thanks in anticipation. I've also posted this on the Medal Cards section as it is a two fold query. Apologies to moderators if this is incorrect.
