BottsGreys Posted 21 January , 2008 Share Posted 21 January , 2008 SG: I have a copy of The Annals of the KRRC, Vol V, The Great War by Maj-Gen Sir Steuart Hare. The index shows the 8th Battalion specifically mentioned for its part in these actions: Hooge, Delville Wood, Flers, Arras, Inverness Copse, and in March 1918. Any of these actions what you're looking for? Chris

MBrockway Posted 23 January , 2008 Share Posted 23 January , 2008 SG, I have the war diary for this battalion and most of the 14th (Light) Division's war diary if you need anything from it. Andy SG, I have the full set of KRRC Chronicles for 1914-1919. They include Battalion War Records for each battalion, which are admittedly based on the same War Diaries Andy mentions, but they're occasionally supplemented by useful maps and additional info. If you give us some specific dates or topics, I'm sure we'll drown you in useful info! Cheers, Mark
susanhemmings Posted 26 January , 2008 Share Posted 26 January , 2008 A work colleague stuck up a picture of her great grandmother and told me that the first husband had been killed during WW1. I was instantly alert and had to piece together the relationship(s) marriages etc and only had a photocopy picture of the chap himself - the cap badge was so blurred. Eventually narrowed it down looking over 200+ records on CWGC site. Chaps name: John Carter R/8139. KRRC. K I A 30.7.1915 Name on Menin Gate. And lo and behold a service record was on Ancestry. I was so happy to be able to give her something of her great grandad. Page 2 - attached - especially saddened me as someone (presumably John) had written on it "I LOVE NELL TAYLOR"... the maiden name of his wife Ellen. Page 6 is also sad as it lists his effects returned to his (then remarried) wife... Just wanted to share this with you . Susan.
shinglma Posted 26 January , 2008 Share Posted 26 January , 2008 Susan John Carter was killed at Hooge on 30/07/1915. My great-uncle (also 8th Battalion) was fighting along side him that day. Kind regards Mike Shingleton
susanhemmings Posted 27 January , 2008 Share Posted 27 January , 2008 Mike, thank you for that. I will let my work pal know. Was browsing VCs on the Western Front 1915 last night and came across Hooge. 30th July 1915 - reading of it was awful. Poor souls. Fire, machine gun - terrible. Have just ordered KRRC annuls 1914-1919 from Naval and Military Press (if anyone needs anything when it arrives, but it looks as if you already have a good collection between you). Always willing to help though. God rest their souls. Remembered always. Susan.
