William George Bedford

Hi,[/size] I am very new to this and will apologise up front for any questions which may seem silly or time wasting to you all. I have been researching my family tree for a while now and have recently been sent some information on my Great Grandfather, who served in the British Forces. I have a few details on him which I will include now: William George Bedford, born in Middlesex around 1877. He enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment in 1895 as # 4830I also have another number for him 690692, which I think was for the Labour Corps ( not that this really means anything to me as I have no idea at all and am still trying to learn as I go) I think he may have been discharged in or around 1919? I have been totally stuck on my Grandmothers birth for so long as she has never shown up on the English records, and it seems now she may have been born at Murree Hill - India around 1913/14. Can any one give me any clues as to when William may have been posted there and how long he might have stayed please? Also, if you can point me in the right direction for applying for a birth certificate for her that would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer. Kindest regards,Jan

Hi Jan Welcome to the Forum. Your G/Gfather has a lot of documentation on Ancestry.co pension records but I cannot download it for you as this computer is "playing up" hopefully another member can help. It lists his wife as Florence? married 22-3-1910 died 15-2-1919 and three children OLIVE born 13-4-1910 York. Violet 10-3-1913 (I think, hard to read, as is the registration but it looks like Murre Hill) and Evylyn born 15-9-1914 ( cannot decipher the registration district) He served in the 19th battalion Yorkshire Regt and then became a reservist and rejoined the forces at the onset of the 1914-18 war, finally being demobbed on 2-3-1919. Regards Ralph.

This could be his medal index card with spelling/clerical error...He was definately entitled to trio so his record says he served in Cawnpore with the Yorkshire Regiment

Cannot find anymore close so it maybe one of the missing ones

He has two Labour Corps numbers.

573779 which dates from 15 July 1918 when he was transferred to the Labour Corps and placed in 151 Prisoner of War Company. This Company was located in the Calais area and he would have been a guard.

He was discharged in February 1919 and re-enlisted into the Labour Corps in May 1919 and was placed in 728 Company. His re-enlistment was as one of the men who volunteered for 1 year's service on exhumation and burial duties. He would originally have been in Menin moving to Paschendale on 22 June. On 7 July they were at Nieuvemolen. He would have remained in the Ypres area until his return to england before he was discharged on 15 November 1919.

Hi Ralph,Thanks for the welcome and the information you have sent my way. I have a 1 month subscription to ancestry.co, which I took up once I was informed of my G/Grandfathers documents being on there. I have a bit of a problem deciphering a lot of it though. ( some is illegible and other parts may as well be written in double Dutch as I have no idea of what it means) That's why I decided to post on this forum as after reading through many pages of posts I realise that most the people here have a lot of very interesting information to share.I appreciate your time and help.Regards,Jan

Hi Ivor,Thanks a million for the information you have shared. It's gives me an insight into where William was and when. I also had a look at your web site which helped shine some light onto the Labour Corps for me as I hadn't really heard of them until seeing my Grt Grandfathers documents. Appreciate your time on this.Regards,Jan

Jan - one of Ancestry's competitors FindmyPast have records of army births on line - I have just looked and the quality is poor - but it looks as if Violet's birth was registered in 1912 - station was Sialkot and the page number looks to be 155.

With this info you should be able to order a copy of her birth certificate through the GRO -

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/#0

I haven't done it myself for an army one - but I'm sure you should be able to work it out

Good Luck

Sue

Hello again,I have just been looking at the Medal card document I got from the national archives. It seems there are a few different William Bedford's mentioned on it, and only 1 looks to be mine. Not sure if the other information is of use to others? Happy to send it on if it helps. Thanks again for your help.Jan

Hi Sue,Thanks for the information, it's greatly appreciated. There's always been a bit of confusion with my Grandmothers birth, so 1912 could be right? I did some searching today and found that we have the State Reference Library here in Western Australia that seems to carry the GRO index for overseas records for British BMD from 1837 - 1970, so I am going to try and give them a call tomorrow and see if they can help me out at all. With what you have given me, it's a good start in the right direction. If I get lucky I shall let you know.Kindest regards,Jan

Jan - I THINK the GRO overseas records may actually be different again to the Army Indices - but hopefully the State Library will be able to point you in the right direction

Good Luck from NSW - off to bed now!!!
