Muerrisch Posted 29 January , 2004 Posted 29 January , 2004 A blatant advert. I can now reveal the forthcoming massively illustrated, fully annotated with footnotes, half a dozen appendices, index, foreword by Frank Richards's daughter, lovely maps ..... pure heaven, and not a word of FR's changed. Small production run, hard back, dust jacket, 360 pages including 32 crammed with illustrations, many never seen before ....... aaaahhhhhh! Not sure if I can bear to part with any. Companion volume Old Soldier Sahib to same format to follow in about a year. Price likely £25 plus p&p at cost, sterling cheques only, and my wife will be distributor. Please express interest by e-mail with your address and telephone if possible and I will update you personally. Intended publication is Red Dragon Crater Day, 22 June 2004.
salientpoints Posted 29 January , 2004 Posted 29 January , 2004 Hi, Can you tell us what is the difference between this and the Naval & Military Press version currently available given the price differential? I am not in a position to compare the titles and having read the review here and on amazon am intrigued to make a purchase! Thanks Ryan
burlington Posted 29 January , 2004 Posted 29 January , 2004 LB could you please let us lesser mortals know a bit about this book. Thanks
Muerrisch Posted 30 January , 2004 Author Posted 30 January , 2004 Original book published 1933 written F Richards DCM MM, no illustrations, no index, no footnotes, no appendices, no maps, just a marvellous classic of the life of a rifle and bayonet man in a proud battalion' present on the Western front from first to last. This new edition, produced with full FR family support, and a foreword by his daughter, contains scores of unseen illustrations. Every nuance of time, place, character that can be added by annotators appears as footnotes on relevant page. There are six appendices: eg The Regimental Goats, Crime and Punishment, Statistics of Survival ......... Even poetry from the ranks. Comprehensive bibliography and index. The Intro. gives hitherto totally unknown details of FR life and his relationship with Robert Graves. This book "happened" when two fanatics got together and is a labour of love. I cannot wait to see it in print.
Jonathan Saunders Posted 30 January , 2004 Posted 30 January , 2004 LB could you please let us lesser mortals know a bit about this book. Thanks If I could only have one book rather than the couple of thousand that I own, then OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE would be it. David - I trust you received my order last night ... I wont settle until I have a copy in my hands.
Muerrisch Posted 30 January , 2004 Author Posted 30 January , 2004 All noted to here, and e-mails safely printed and in a folder. Thanks to all for interest.
Nick Saunders Posted 30 January , 2004 Posted 30 January , 2004 LB Please could I reserve a copy. I have both of the books by Frank Richards, and they are fantastic reads. I will really enjoy an expanded version. I am currently wading trhough Four Years ont he Western Front by Aubrey Smith, and I am beginning to think I prefer Frank Richards story. Has anyone read 'Safe and Quartered Here' by George MacDonald Fraser. That is the best WW2 book I have read. It is un-putdownable! Best wishes Nick Saunders
Jonathan Saunders Posted 30 January , 2004 Posted 30 January , 2004 Quartered Safe ... I havent read it for several years now but a lively read as I recall.
Muerrisch Posted 31 January , 2004 Author Posted 31 January , 2004 Please could I reserve a copy. I have both of the books by Frank Richards, and they are fantastic reads. I will really enjoy an expanded version. Noted. I now have nine orders. CD is at printer. Informal target date publication is 22 June, but orders will be despatched, after receipt of payment, as soon as I have a metric ton of books to shift. If you have Lynne McDonalds 'Somme', OSND will be very similar in size, format, and indeed weight. OSS is a year behind OSND. As for Fraser's book, I totally agree. The sort of book I wish I hadn't read, because I won't now have the pleasure of reading it for the first time!
salientpoints Posted 31 January , 2004 Posted 31 January , 2004 Who's the publisher of this edition LB? is it Naval & Military like the paperback edition? Thanks
Muerrisch Posted 31 January , 2004 Author Posted 31 January , 2004 I am joint publisher .......... the commercial publishing houses, seeing N&M were softbacking, did not want to take risk. I am one of a consortium that believe a definitive de-luxe edition deserves to see the light of day. And it will. The consortium is big enough to make individual risk bearable, but the product is so good I have every confidence. Hope that fills in the background.
salientpoints Posted 31 January , 2004 Posted 31 January , 2004 Thanks LB. I was curious from a publishing perspective as to who was the publisher as there seems no marketing on this edition (as someone in the trade I keep an eye on military titles). How are you selling this in to the local independent bookshop or the IWM shop for exmaple? is this not on the agenda? I would imagine a metric ton of books is few! I would think one pallet of books is about one ton and therefore a pallet around 800 copies you have to shift? If you need any advise/help on this I am more than willing to oblige. Ryan
Muerrisch Posted 31 January , 2004 Author Posted 31 January , 2004 Thank you for that. Don't forget we are not in this primarily to make money. We have an eye on a small, selected number of outlets, but aim to sell a decent proportion at full price through post. We expect next WFA journal will have a full page, full colour leaflet included. And yes, advice would be appreciated but two of our consortium sell military books.

Ian Buffalo Bill was Captain CI Stockwell. And lots of photos of Frank, all but one never seen before. And his presentation inscribed gold watch. And his pub. Unfortunately his widow slung his pipe out.
