Jarvis Posted 21 January , 2008 Share Posted 21 January , 2008 Hello Forum, I have a name that appears on two local memorials but have struggled to find out more than just his name. The name Connell G appears on the war memorial at Bowes Museum and at St Marys Church (both Barnard Castle). NA and CWGC can provide the following information, but not enough to positively ID the chap. CONNELL, GEORGE SHARP Private 11843 18/11/1914 King's Own Scottish Borderers Panel 22. YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL Medal card of Connell, G S Corps: King's Own Scottish Borderers Regiment No: 11843 Rank: Private 1914-1920 WO 372/24 Medal card of Connell, George A Corps: Royal Engineers Regiment No: 283840 Rank: Sapper... 1914-1920 WO 372/4 CONNELL, GILBERT Private 2387 21/07/1915 West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) Panel 21. YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL I have also checked for O'Connell G in case of spelling mistakes (not unheard of) and find only one on CWGC O'CONNELL, GEORGE Initials: G Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Engineman Regiment/Service: Royal Naval Reserve Unit Text: H.M. Trawler, Warland Age: 46 Date of Death: 06/01/1919 Service No: 5876/TS Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: C. V. 22. Cemetery: DOVER (ST. JAMES'S) CEMETERY Can anyone assist me further to find my man ? Regards. Jarvis.
Malcolm Posted 21 January , 2008 Share Posted 21 January , 2008 The first man was born in Girvan. Geoff's engine gives 79 for Barnard Castle but not a Connell. Aye Malcolm
Jarvis Posted 21 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 21 January , 2008 Hello Malcolm and thanks for the input. I have asked for this information on the Forum before, last year, and established the first chap was of Girvan descent. I had just forgotten I had been down this road before but the mention of Girvan brings me back to my notes...which are almost empty in the case of this chap. Still searching whenever time is available to me though. Regards. Jarvis.

My wife and I (Girvan and District Great War Project) have researched over 475 local men from WW1 and this is some of what we have for George Sharp Connell. If we can help in any way please dont hesitate to get back in touch.. Kindest regards Ritchie
